The last Adel Farmers Market on the Chamber's calendar is Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Main Street in the historic downtown. The next big event on the square is the Hometown Holiday tree lighting at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. That leaves 38 days with no market and no organized event on the square itself.
Downtown doesn't go dark during those weeks. What changes is who sets the schedule. From late October to early December, the reason to walk the bricks comes from storefront hours, a few one-night events at individual shops and the library calendar. One new business on Main Street, open less than a week, has added a standing Saturday slot that the downtown calendar didn't have before.
The Two Dates the Chamber Has Pinned Down
The market moved to Main Street this year. When Raccoon Valley Radio covered the season's start in late May, it said the weekly market would run through September and then become a fall market in October. That report gave no closing date. The Oct. 27 listing is the latest one on the Adel Partners Chamber calendar. The Chamber's November and December calendars list no more markets, and no indoor or holiday market appears after it. If a late market gets added, the Chamber's event calendar is where it would show up first.
The far end of the gap is just as firm. Hometown Holiday is listed for Friday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 8 p.m. on the historic downtown square. Between those two dates, the Chamber's November calendar has nothing scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28, and none of the sources checked showed an Adel business promoting Small Business Saturday that day. The Chamber's regular networking breakfast, Morning on the Bricks, does run in that window. It's at the Raccoon Valley Community House, 1016 Main St., from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. on Nov. 4 and again on Dec. 2. It's a member event, though, not a public draw.
So the official calendar has a starting point and an end point and very little between them. The rest of this guide is about the businesses and dates that fill that stretch.
What's Actually on the Calendar Between Them
These are the dated events that fall in or next to the gap, in order:
- Saturdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24, noon to 4 p.m. "Learn to Play" at Bright Games & Gifts, 906 Main St.
- Thursday, Oct. 8. Fall open house at Azalea Lane Boutique, 803 Main St., with fall treats, new arrivals and a $15 charcuterie class at 6:30 p.m. The shop asks for RSVPs.
- Wednesday, Oct. 14, 4 to 5 p.m. Teen: Spooky Crafts at the Adel Public Library.
- Tuesday, Oct. 27, 4 to 7 p.m. The last Farmers Market listed for the year, on Main Street.
- Wednesday, Oct. 28, 4 to 5 p.m. Teen Chef: Spooky Snacks at the library.
- Saturday, Oct. 31, 6 to 8 p.m. Beggar's Night across the whole city. The city's notice doesn't mention a separate event on the square.
- Monday, Nov. 9, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Adult Craft at the library.
- Friday, Nov. 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take and Make Craft: Thankful Tree at the library.
- Friday, Dec. 4, 1 to 8 p.m. Hometown Holiday on the square.
Most of October is covered. After the last market and Beggar's Night, the November dates are two library programs and a members' breakfast. The weeks that need filling are the ones after Halloween.
Saturdays Now Have a Fixed Slot at 906 Main
Bright Games & Gifts had its ribbon cutting with the Adel Chamber on the morning of Friday, Sept. 25. It sits just off the downtown square at 906 Main St. and is owned by Jeremy and Suzanne Hegarty. Chamber President Erin Milroy described the shop as toys, games, creativity and fun, with a knowledgeable staff. Jeremy Hegarty described what he hopes it becomes:
"We're really here to help people find new ways to make new friends and to have experiences with friends they already have."
The shop's own calendar turns that into a schedule. "Learn to Play: Surprise Us!" runs every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The shop calls it its "Weekly, Saturday Learn to Play time" and says it will post details on the new and classic games it plans to introduce. The October dates listed so far are the 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. The shop hasn't published tournament dates or a list of featured games, so the event page is the place to check what's planned for a given Saturday. On the day its About page was captured, it showed hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It doesn't list a full weekly schedule.
This matters for the gap because it's the only recurring downtown event in the research that repeats every week and isn't tied to the season. The Farmers Market ends with the growing season and Hometown Holiday happens once. A weekly game session at a fixed time gives the square a regular Saturday reason to visit through the colder months, as long as the shop keeps posting dates. Mayor Tim Crannell framed the opening around this kind of local business:
"This is what I envisioned with Adel becoming more of a small business community."
Where the Hours Line Up
With no organized events on the square after Halloween, it comes down to which doors are open and when. Here are the posted hours for the food and drink spots on and near the square:
| Business | Address | Posted hours | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bright Games & Gifts | 906 Main St. | 10 a.m.–8 p.m. on the day captured | Learn to Play, Saturdays noon–4 p.m. |
| Great White Buffalo Public House | 815 Main St. | Tue–Thu 4–10 p.m.; Fri–Sat 4 p.m.–close; closed Sun–Mon | 21+ |
| River to River Bakery & Pizza | 109 N. 9th St. | Mon–Thu 7 a.m.–8 p.m.; Fri–Sat 7 a.m.–9 p.m.; closed Sun | Formerly Brick Streets Bakery |
| The Morning Grind | 720 Prairie St. | Weekdays 5:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.; weekends 7 a.m.–1 p.m. | Coffee and bakery |
| 9th Street Smash & Tap | 112 S. 9th St. | Check the business site | Smash burgers and tots |
Put the posted hours together and Saturday has the longest overlap. The Morning Grind is open until 1 p.m., Bright's session runs noon to 4, Great White Buffalo opens at 4, and River to River serves until 9. Sunday is a different story. Great White Buffalo and River to River are both closed, so a Sunday downtown has fewer options.
Great White Buffalo's hours have changed since it opened. Raccoon Valley Radio's March 2025 ribbon-cutting story listed later closing times than the ones posted on the website now. The restaurant opened Feb. 13, 2025, after co-owners Jessica and David Lecocq spent a year renovating the building. It serves Iowa-made cocktails. The website is the better guide for a fall evening. Neither it nor 9th Street Smash & Tap, which marked its first year in June, had posted a fall events calendar when this guide was put together.
The Friday That Ends the Gap
The listing for Hometown Holiday has the basic schedule. Santa's reindeer are at City Hall from 2 to 4 p.m., the tree lighting is at 5 p.m., and local businesses serve holiday items during Sip & Sample. Admission is free except for carriage rides. The Chamber says more details are coming, and the theme is still listed as TBD.
There's one scheduling difference to keep in mind. Travel Iowa lists the event for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4–5, and describes Saturday as a day to come back and shop local. It also mentions Santa visits, seasonal music and family activities on Friday. The Chamber's own listing shows Friday only. Neither page has a Saturday schedule. The Chamber lists the Friday components and Travel Iowa adds the Saturday shopping day, so Saturday, Dec. 5, will depend on what individual shops post.
The Sip & Sample merchants haven't been named yet. A Friday afternoon can still be planned around the places with posted hours. River to River serves until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Great White Buffalo opens at 4, an hour before the tree lighting. Bright Games & Gifts will be going into its first holiday season at 906 Main St. that weekend.
If one of these weekends on the square overlaps with planning a move, Adam Bugbee and Iowa Home Experts can handle the timing on the selling side so you can still make it to the tree lighting. Ask about a Guaranteed Cash Offer and sell your home worry-free.
